License

Kaya is free to use β€” including commercially. The short version: use it all you like, keep everything you make with it, don't redistribute or resell the software itself, and don't offer it as a hosted service. The source isn't public yet.

Kaya Beta License Β· v1.0 Β· July 2026 Β· plain-text copy (also shipped alongside every release)

What you may do

  1. Install and use the Software on machines you control, for personal, educational, or commercial purposes, at no charge.
  2. Keep everything you make with it. Programs you write in the Kaya language and the outputs they produce are yours; this license claims no rights over them.

What you may not do

  1. Redistribute, sell, rent, or sublicense the Software itself, or bundle it inside a product you distribute. (Point people at the installer instead β€” it's one line.)
  2. Offer the Software to third parties as a hosted or managed service β€” for example, selling access to Kaya execution as a product.
  3. Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software, except to the extent applicable law permits it despite this limitation.
  4. Remove or alter proprietary notices in the Software.

You're on your own

  1. The Software is provided β€œas is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied β€” including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. This is a beta of a personal project: things will break, and updates may change behavior without notice.
  2. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for any claim, damages, or other liability arising from or in connection with the Software or your use of it.
  3. The Software invokes third-party model providers using API credentials you supply. Those calls, their costs, and their outputs are governed by your agreements with those providers.

Term

  1. This license applies to the Software versions it ships with. A newer license published at this page governs versions released after it; versions you already downloaded remain under the license they shipped with.
  2. This license terminates automatically if you breach it. On termination, stop using and delete the Software.

Why isn't this open source?

  • This is a fun hobby project, and open-sourcing it feels like more obligation than I want right now.
  • If people start using this seriously, I'm very open to it. For now, the honest answer is that I'm optimizing for my own enjoyment.
  • Kaya doesn't β€œphone home” with analytics. Claude told me I should mention this, so I am.
